Bar/Bat Mitzvah Blog Post

The past couple of weeks, in class, we have been learning about the responsibilities of a Bar/Bat Mitzvah. After a Bar/Bat Mitzvah Jewish boys or girls become responsible for living according to Jewish Law. They are not responsible for fulfilling all of the mitzvot, but they are regarded as Jewish adults. Some of the requirements are wearing Tefillin in the morning services, wearing tzitzit and Tallit, or just simply following shabbat.

Tzitzit, Tallit, and Tefillin are very important because they are a constant reminder of G-d. Tzitzit or fringe’s purpose is to constantly remember G-d’s commandments (613 mitzvot).

The Tallit is a Jewish prayer shawl, while the Tefillin are two square, black leather boxes that contain parchments of Torah verses. The three main Torah texts found in the Tefillin include: 1–2. Kadesh and Vehayah ki yeviacha. These describe the requirement of the Jewish people to always remember the redemption from Egyptian slavery, and the job of every Jew to educate their children about this and about G-d’s commandments. 3. Shema. There is only one G-d, and commands us to love and fear Him.

Before this unit I knew almost nothing about this subject. Like how many more responsibilities a Bar/Bat Mitzvah have to take on. I just thought it was kind of like a birthday, you read from the torah and then have a big party. I still do want to know a little more about why girls have their Bar Mitzvahs before boys do but I think it’s just because girls mature faster.

Thank You for reading
